Practice Prevention

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some of the most common health problems in the United States are diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Yet, we can choose to make lifestyle adjustments that help prevent these conditions. Chronic disease drastically compromises the quality of life while also increasing healthcare costs. Here are five healthy behaviors that you can do to practice prevention of these chronic disease.
Â
Practice weight management. It’s important to know what a healthy weight range is for you. This is based on many factors: body type, age, and height, to name a few. If you need to figure out what a healthy weight is for you, ask your doctor or a nurse to help determine the appropriate range.
Eat a balanced diet. Focus on whole foods like fresh vegetables, fruit, and lean proteins. Skip the sugary drinks and soda. Choose unsweetened or sparkling water as often as possible. Limit refined white breads and move towards whole ancient grains. Making your meal plan vegetable and protein-based is a great way to boost your immune system.
Be more active. Believe it or not, exercise is the best way to increase your energy level and live well. At any skill level, it’s important to talk with your doctor and find an activity that meets your needs. Implementing aerobic activity and some weight-bearing exercises is best to increase muscle tone and bone density.
Know your numbers. Be aware of your personal blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Get these numbers checked regularly at your doctor’s office or at a health fair. When you keep these numbers in the appropriate range, you are reducing your risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions.
